Hungry Hungry Hippos

Marbles for Marylando

by David Henry

Hungry Hippos   In the first two "Gaming" events, the athletes from Marylando walked away with four of the first six medals. Their dominance continued today during the Hungry Hungry Hippos tournament. In what looked to be a pretty wide open field, the two Marylando teammates, Mark and Todd, made everyone else just look bad.
Like previous events there were two rounds. The first round had two games where the first and second place contestants moved on to the championship round. After the first match it was pretty obvious who had been practicing their marble chomping. Todd and Mark of Marylando destroyed Becky of Butenia and Jennifer of Campbella in the first game. Their respective hippos gathered every marble but two. Becky got both of those. The second match was much closer. Scott of Otros collected the most marbles. Megan of Butenia had one less. Cory of Campbella and Pill Bug of Buggland finished third and fourth.
The second round did provide a little suspense. Only in who would actually get gold and who would get silver between Mark and Todd. The two Marylando hippo masters quickly gobbled up a majority of marbles before Megan and Scott knew what hit them. When the results were tallied, Mark had two more than Todd. Megan finished with three marbles for third and the bronze. After the match I spoke with Mark and Todd.
"Mark and I have been training for this event now for three years." said Todd. "We knew coming in that we were good to go."
"Yeah, we figured most people wouldn't really do much training. I mean, Hungry Hippos is a kids game so how hard can it be?" said Mark. "Well it isn't hard, but if you want to be the best in the world you have to train. It is just like anything else."
