Being the freak that I am, I have always been fascinated by
fire. That is why I think the coolest event at the Pill Bug Olympics
is the Fire Building event. The event is quite simple. Each contestant
is given a bunch of wood. With that wood they must build a fire with
the flame reaching at least two feet off the ground. The first person
to do so, wins.
The coolest thing about this event this year was one of the athletes,
Elfin of Campbella, accidentally lit himself on fire. It was so funny watching
him run around in a circle and act all goofy. Other than Elfin, competing in
the event were Jarrod of Butenia, Desmond and Stephen of Marylando,
Chinsey of Campbella, Scott of Otros, and Pill Bug of Buggland. Everyone
started with the same number of sticks and boards. Chinsey, using the knowledge
he learned as a boy scout, quickly started rubbing some sticks together and
got smoke. Everyone else saw Chinsey's plan working so they did the same thing.
This gave Chinsey a huge lead though and he had the first flame to reach two
feet. Second place was much closer. Elfin had the lead until he caught himself
on fire as mentioned. This disqualified him because you are only allowed to burn
the wood and he was burning himself. After Elfin was disqualified, Desmond
became the clear front runner for silver and eventually won it. He was
almost passed by Jarrod who ended up third.
